I had walked in front of the wall of windows at least a dozen times when I noticed Erin talking to Killian and Luke. She was shaking her head, and she was arguing with them. I walked over to see what they were talking about.

“Erin, what do you want me to do about it?”

“I want you to ask Ash who he is listening to. I’m telling you, they’ll ask for the grandfather to deliver the money. I was there. I heard the man’s voice. We have to save Maddie.”

She looked like she would fall to the floor any minute. “Erin, would you like to rest for a while. I can show you where you can sleep for a few hours.”

“Yes, I think I would like that very much. Thank you.” I took her hand. I told Theresa I was going to take Erin up to the guest room to rest. And we walked upstairs. I showed her to the guest room with its own bathroom. She looked at me.

“Can you wash my body if I shower? I can’t reach everywhere those men touched me. I want every inch of me clean. Those filthy men. Can you wash my back?”

“Yes, I’ll wash their touch away.” She nodded, stripped out of her clothes, and stepped in the shower. Her body was covered in bruises. As the water ran over her, I stripped off my clothes, took the washcloth and soap, and started washing her back. Then the soapy washcloth went down her hips and legs. I turned her around, and the cloth went over her breast, down over her tummy, and inside her thighs. She was everything I wanted and right where I would have wanted her if Maddie hadn’t been taken. I wish I could have carried her to the bed, but I would help her forget while in the shower.

When we finished taking our shower, I found her some sweats and a top, from the room I knew was Jullian's old room. I helped her dress and tucked her in before I left her resting. I walked into the kitchen, made sandwiches and coffee, and carried them to where everyone was. I prayed that Maddie would call again; I needed to hear her voice. It was three in the morning when she called.

“Daddy, he said to have Grandpa bring the money to….” I stopped her before she finished talking.

“Grandpa can’t do it. He’s in the hospital. He had a heart attack.” I could hear the man talking. I raised my head, and Erin watched me. We could hear the man clearly; he must be right next to her.

“He said to have Grandma…” Again, I stopped her from talking.

“Grandma is with Grandpa. I have to bring the money. There is no one else.”

“He said to bring the money behind the little chapel on Parker square. We’ll meet you there.” The phone went dead.

Angel stepped up next to me. “I’ll be you. I’ll wear a jacket. He probably doesn’t know what you look like.
